Germany's agreement sets a new global precedent.
In a significant move, Germany has signaled its support for the US proposal to aid Kyiv. This crucial step brings us closer to securing a major new aid package for Ukraine, irrespective of the outcome in November's presidential election. The proposal is gaining traction. It's slated to be a focal point at the G7 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting starting on May 23 in Italy.
However, don't expect a final agreement just yet. German officials anticipate the final agreement to materialize during the G7 summit on June 13-15. The US proposal, which involves only the use of interest earned from assets without their confiscation, has been welcomed in European capitals including Berlin. It's a marked shift from the current arrangement where EU countries have agreed to use these revenues and transfer them to Ukraine twice a year.
